How to Paint Fantasy Terrain Rooftops

how to paint fantasy terrain rooftops

If you’re looking for a fast and effective way to paint your fantasy rooftops, this tutorial breaks it down into easy steps using our DarkMyth Village terrain set. Whether you’re prepping for your next wargame or building out a detailed diorama, this guide will help you achieve great results with minimal fuss.

Step 1: Priming & Base Coating

Start by priming your rooftop pieces with your choice of primer – black or grey both work well. Once primed, lay down a base coat using a mix of black and dark brown. I used an airbrush with thinned craft acrylics for speed, but you can also use a brush if you prefer.

Step 2: Painting Roof Tiles

To bring out the tiles’ depth and texture, follow these drybrushing steps:

  • Apply a dark blue drybrush across the tiles.
  • Layer over that with a lighter blue drybrush.
  • Finish with a white drybrush to highlight the raised edges and really make the tiles pop.

This three-step drybrushing technique adds instant visual interest and helps the details stand out on the tabletop.

Step 3: Painting the Wood Details

For the wooden beams and frames:

  • Brush on a base of dark brown.
  • Highlight with a lighter chocolate brown to bring out the grain.
  • Pick out the metal bolts using a copper paint.
  • Finish with a generous application of a home-made dirt wash to weather the wood and unify the tones.

This process gives the wood a rich, aged appearance that complements the rustic village aesthetic.

Step 4: Stone Sections on Roof Variants

Some rooftops in the set have a stone texture. These are super easy to finish:

  • Drybrush with light grey.
  • Add a final highlight of white to catch the highest details.

The result is a realistic, time-worn stone look that blends seamlessly with the rest of the village.

Step 5: Thatched Roofs

For the thatched rooftops:

  • Mix up a pale yellow base coat.
  • Drybrush upward to white highlights for a sun-bleached straw effect.
  • Use the same wood and dirt wash technique as above for any wooden framework.

These steps keep the thatch looking natural and textured, adding variety to your builds.

Is DarkMyth Village Resin-Printable?

We’ve had a few questions about resin printing, and the answer is yes!
The push-fit system is optimized for resin and holds together beautifully. Plus, the details print incredibly crisp, making them ideal for high-resolution paint jobs like this one.
